According to the Telegeography report, the Internet bandwidth usage has reached 1,217 Tbps in 2023 while it’s been growing steadily at 30% per year for the past 20 years. In the meantime, Euroconsult, estimated the HTS Satcom capacity around only 15.3 Tbps in 2022 as it is only relying on radio communications with limited bandwidth compared to terrestrial fiber.

Through the development of laser communication between Earth and Space, satcom and telecom operators are converging to extend the core terrestrial fiber network into space.

OPTIMIZING THE USE OF SATELLITES AND TELEPORTS

Data from Earth observation satellites are currently only transmitted to the ground when they are flying over their teleport. Thanks to laser communication links between satellites, they will be able to relay information between each other until one is able to establish a connection with a teleport. 


The use of laser communications from space to the ground allows the continuity of the optical link from the image capture to the data centers. Offering the possibility to obtain images of the Earth in real time at very high resolution.

CONTINUITY OF SERVICES

While laser communications offer many advantages over radio (capacity, security, no licence cost, resistance to interference and to interception), they are extremely susceptible to weather conditions (clouds, turbulence absorption).
